As we step into another week of winter, it's essential to know how the weather might affect our everyday lives. This week is shaping up to be a roller coaster of snowfall, freezing rain, and sleet. These conditions present both challenges and chances for enjoying winter fun. Here, we break down what to expect as you plan your week ahead.

Tonight's Forecast

Tonight, prepare for a mixture of precipitation. Snow, freezing rain, and sleet are likely before 4 a.m. The weather will get more intense early in the morning, with snow and sleet expected between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. After that, it will transition to a mix of snow and freezing rain, possibly mixed with sleet.

Expect temperatures to dip to around 27°F, with an east wind blowing at 5 to 9 mph. With a 90% chance of precipitation, be ready for slippery roads and sidewalks. Total nighttime ice accumulation could reach less than a tenth of an inch, while snow and sleet accumulation may reach about 2 inches. For context, two inches of snow can cover the ground quite nicely, making it perfect for a spontaneous snowball fight or building a small snowman.

Sunday Forecast

Sunday will start with rain that is likely to mix with freezing rain and sleet. By 11 a.m., it should turn to all rain, with a high temperature around 43°F. An east wind is expected to blow between 11 and 14 mph, with gusts up to 24 mph.

With a 100% chance of precipitation, anticipate new ice accumulation of about 0.2 inches and less than half an inch of sleet. This downpour may complicate travel plans, especially for those who rely on roadways for commutes or weekend getaways. It's wise to check traffic updates and adjust your plans accordingly.

Sunday Night and Beyond

As Sunday night unfolds, rain will likely continue, possibly mixed with snow showers before 7 p.m. Expect blowing snow late in the evening, with temperatures dropping to around 16°F. Wind chill values could dip as low as 0°F due to brisk west winds gusting up to 41 mph.

The chance of precipitation remains high at 80%, with new snow accumulation expected to be around 3 inches. For those who love snow, this creates a fantastic opportunity for activities like sledding or simply enjoying the beauty of a freshly snow-covered landscape. However, travel may be hazardous, so prioritize safety if you must venture out.

Washington's Birthday Weather

On Monday, which is also Washington's Birthday, snow showers will primarily dominate the forecast before 1 p.m. Windy conditions will persist, with a high near 22°F, and wind chill values could dip to about -2°F.

With a 90% chance of precipitation, residents can expect an additional snow accumulation of roughly 3 inches, creating a winter wonderland perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. Just be cautious, as the blowing snow might reduce visibility significantly, increasing the risk of accidents.

Monday Night and Tuesday Outlook

Monday night will bring another round of snow showers, particularly after 1 a.m., along with patchy blowing snow. The skies will stay mostly cloudy, with temperatures dropping to around 9°F. Winds will remain breezy from the west, with gusts reaching up to 39 mph. The probability of precipitation is at 60%, leading to possible additional snowfall.

On Tuesday, snow showers are also expected, mainly before 1 p.m. While patchy blowing snow may continue, it should decrease as the day goes on. Highs will be near 18°F, still making it feel pretty chilly. There is a 60% chance of precipitation on Tuesday, so be prepared for more snow.

Midweek Updates

As we move into midweek, expect potential snow showers to continue. Wednesday could see highs around 20°F and a 30% chance of snow showers, with overnight temperatures dipping to about 7°F.

Thursday will also bring a chance of snow, with a high of 23°F. It's crucial to keep a close watch on the forecast, as conditions may shift quickly with temperature changes and varying precipitation.

Preparing for Winter's Challenges

This week brings a mix of snow conditions and potential freezing rain, creating several weather challenges. Staying updated and prepared for travel disruptions ensures your safety during these unpredictable winter days. Whether you’re excited to build a snowman or just want to enjoy a warm drink while watching the snowfall, be ready for the upcoming changes. Stay cozy and safe!
