Central New York is heading into one of those classic spring swings where a calm, bright afternoon can turn into a soaking night, then a warm and stormy Friday, followed by a crisp but sunny weekend.

The next several days bring a little bit of everything: quiet sunshine, widespread rain, possible thunderstorms, gusty winds, a sharp cooldown, and then a clear rebound into early next week. For Madison County and nearby parts of Central New York, the biggest weather impacts arrive tonight through Friday night. The weekend looks much more settled, though noticeably cooler at first.

A calm afternoon sets the stage for a wetter pattern

This afternoon stays pleasant and simple. Expect mostly sunny skies with a high near 58 degrees. Winds remain calm, which should make the afternoon feel comfortable for early spring.

This is the quiet part of the pattern. It is a good window for errands, dog walks, outdoor cleanup, school sports practices, or anything that is easier to finish before rain arrives.

The air will not feel especially humid yet, and there is no sign of severe weather during the afternoon period. The bigger change begins after sunset as moisture increases and a more active system moves in.

Here is the short version of the next several periods:

That table shows the main story clearly. Friday is the warm, wet, stormy day. Saturday is the cooler reset. Sunday through Wednesday look brighter and more stable.

Tonight brings widespread showers and a late thunder chance

Rain becomes much more likely tonight, with showers expected and thunderstorms possible after about 5 a.m. The chance of precipitation is high, near 90 percent, so this is not a passing sprinkle type of setup.

Most areas can expect around a quarter to half an inch of rain tonight. That amount is manageable for many places, but it can still create ponding in poor drainage spots, muddy yards, and slick roads during the late night and early morning hours.

Temperatures stay relatively mild overnight, with a low around 47 degrees. An east wind at 5 to 10 mph will add a chilly, damp feel, but the main concern is the rain itself.

For the Thursday night into Friday morning period, a few practical details stand out:

  • Wet roads may slow the Friday morning commute.

  • Low spots and roadside ditches may collect water.

  • Early thunder is possible near daybreak.

  • Outdoor items should be secured before winds increase Friday.

  • Basements and sump pumps are worth checking if they respond quickly to repeated rain.

Thunderstorms after 5 a.m. do not mean everyone will hear thunder before breakfast. It means the atmosphere becomes supportive enough for embedded thunder within the broader rain shield. Some places may only see steady showers. Others may get a rumble or two.

Friday turns warm, wet, and breezy

Friday is the most active day in the forecast. Showers and thunderstorms are likely, with precipitation chances again near 90 percent. The high climbs to around 71 degrees, making it by far the warmest day in this stretch.

That warmth matters. When mild air surges into Central New York in spring while rain and wind are already in place, the atmosphere can become more energetic. This forecast does not need to be overhyped. Still, Friday has enough movement, warmth, and moisture to make thunderstorms more noticeable than a typical cool rain.

Southwest winds increase to 13 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. That is not damaging wind by itself, but it is strong enough to blow around empty trash bins, lightweight patio furniture, basketball hoops, and loose tarps. It can also make driving feel less steady on exposed roads, especially for higher-profile vehicles.

New rainfall Friday could add another quarter to half an inch. Combined with Thursday night’s rain, many areas may pick up a meaningful soaking before the system exits.

What Friday may feel like hour by hour

The exact timing of heavier showers and storms can shift, but the general pattern is easier to plan around.

Morning

Rain is likely, and some embedded thunder may continue from the early morning period. Roads may be wet, and visibility may drop in heavier showers.

Midday

Temperatures rise quickly compared with the rest of the week. A warm, damp feel develops, with showers or storms still possible.

Afternoon

This may be the most springlike part of the day, but also one of the more unsettled. Gusty southwest winds and scattered thunderstorms may create quick changes in conditions.

Evening

Showers remain possible as colder air begins to approach. Temperatures start trending downward later, setting up a very different feel by Saturday.

For plans on Friday, the best approach is simple: keep rain gear handy and expect interruptions. Outdoor work, school activities, and travel may need flexibility. If thunder is heard, move indoors. Spring storms can look routine until they are close.

Friday night brings the cold front and a quick temperature drop

By Friday night, the system begins pulling away, but showers may linger. The chance of rain drops to around 50 percent, and any new rainfall should be light, generally less than a tenth of an inch.

The bigger change is the air behind the system. Temperatures fall to around 34 degrees by Saturday morning. Northwest winds around 14 mph will make it feel colder than the number alone suggests.

This is the familiar Central New York spring switch. One day reaches the lower 70s with thunderstorms. The next morning feels close to winter again.

The drop may catch people off guard because Friday will be warm. If jackets, hoodies, or work gloves get pushed aside during the day, they may be needed again by Friday night and Saturday morning.

Gardeners should pay attention to the colder nights in this forecast. Saturday night drops to around 30 degrees, and Sunday night drops to around 34 degrees. Whole fields and established perennials can handle a lot of spring weather, but tender plants, early annuals, and anything recently set outside may need protection.

A few good steps before the colder air arrives:

  • Bring potted plants close to the house or into a sheltered space.

  • Cover tender plants if they have already been planted.

  • Disconnect or protect hoses if they are in a frost-prone spot.

  • Check that pets have a dry, warm place overnight.

  • Dress for wind chill if heading out early Saturday.

Saturday is cooler but brighter

Saturday brings a big change in feel. The sky turns mostly sunny, but the high only reaches around 45 degrees. Northwest winds near 14 mph keep the day brisk.

This is a good example of why sunshine alone does not tell the whole story in April and early spring patterns. Saturday may look inviting from a window, but the air will feel much cooler outdoors, especially in open areas and higher elevations.

The good news is that rain should be gone. After a wet Thursday night and Friday, Saturday offers a chance for roads, fields, and trails to begin drying out. It will not be warm, but it will be usable weather.

For outdoor plans, Saturday works best with layers. A light winter jacket or heavier fleece may still feel right in the morning. By afternoon, sunshine may help sheltered areas feel comfortable, but the wind will keep exposed spots chilly.

Saturday night turns mostly clear, with a low around 30 degrees. That is the coldest night in this forecast stretch. Any standing water in colder sheltered spots may freeze lightly, and frost is possible where skies stay clear and winds ease enough.

For Central New York residents used to these quick spring swings, this is not unusual. It is still a reminder that the growing season does not arrive all at once. The warm Friday may be tempting, but the cold Saturday night says to stay patient with tender planting.

Sunday through Wednesday bring a quieter stretch

After Saturday’s cool pause, the forecast improves in a steady and useful way.

Sunday looks sunny, with a high near 57 degrees. Sunday night stays mostly clear, with a low around 34 degrees. It will still be chilly overnight, but the daytime trend moves in the right direction.

Monday is even milder, with sunshine and a high near 62 degrees. Monday night turns partly cloudy, with a low near 37 degrees. By this point, the pattern looks much calmer than the Thursday night and Friday setup.

Tuesday stays pleasant, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 61 degrees. Tuesday night is mostly clear, with a low near 36 degrees. Wednesday continues the quiet stretch, with sunshine and a high near 60 degrees.

That gives the region several days of better weather after the storm system passes. The ground may still be soft from the rain, but the combination of sunshine, mild afternoons, and mostly clear nights should help conditions improve.

The best windows for outdoor plans appear to be:

  • Sunday afternoon for a cooler but sunny outing.

  • Monday for the mildest calm day after Friday.

  • Tuesday and Wednesday for steady, dry spring weather.

  • Late weekend into early week for yard work, walking, and travel.

If you are planning around fields, trails, or unpaved surfaces, give them some time after the rain. A sunny Sunday does not always mean the ground has dried enough, especially in shaded or low-lying areas.

Clear nights may still bring chilly mornings before the milder pattern settles in.

The main takeaway for the next several days

This forecast has a clear rhythm. This afternoon is quiet. Tonight turns wet. Friday becomes warm, breezy, and stormy. Friday night brings the cold front. Saturday is sunny but chilly. After that, spring steadies itself with several dry and milder days.

The biggest planning concerns are rain and thunderstorms tonight through Friday, followed by colder nights Friday night through Sunday night. Keep an umbrella or rain jacket ready, secure loose outdoor items before Friday’s gusts, and protect tender plants if they are already outside.

By early next week, the pattern looks much easier to work with. Sunshine returns, daytime highs settle near 60, and Central New York gets a more comfortable stretch of spring weather after the stormy shift.
