Severe thunderstorm watch issued for most of Upstate NY

Syracuse, N.Y. -- A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for most of Upstate New York from Buffalo to the Vermont border.

Storms could carry wind gusts of 75 mph, 1-inch hail and frequent lighting, the National Weather Service said.

“A well-organized line of thunderstorms is moving across southeast Ontario, and will affect the watch area this afternoon and evening,” said the Storm Prediction Center, a branch of the weather service. “Damaging winds are the main risk, but hail is also possible.”

A severe thunderstorm watch means that atmospheric conditions are right for severe storms to form over the next several hours. A severe storm is defined as one with winds at least 58 mph and/or hail 1 inch in diameter or greater.

Today’s watch is in effect until 11 p.m.

Heavy rain from thunderstorms could cause flash flooding, especially in areas that have received rounds of heavy rain over the past two weeks. Some parts of Upstate are so soggy, that creeks could spill over and roads could be flooded after less than an just an inch of rain in an hour.

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the counties shaded in yellow.
