Winter weather is about to take center stage with a significant snow event expected to unfold over the next several days. What to Expect This Weekend

Snow will begin mainly after 10 a.m. today, with periods of heavy snowfall likely. Temperatures will hover near 11 degrees Fahrenheit, but wind chill values will make it feel closer to -2 degrees. East winds will blow at 3 to 8 mph, adding to the chill. The chance of precipitation is 100%, with a total daytime snow accumulation expected to reach around 7 inches.

Tonight, the snow continues with similar intensity. Temperatures will drop to around 10 degrees, and wind chill values could reach as low as -3. East winds will increase slightly to 5 to 9 mph before becoming calm after midnight. Another 7 inches of new snow accumulation is expected overnight.

Monday will bring more snow, though lighter than the weekend. Highs will rise to near 21 degrees, with light and variable winds shifting to the west at 5 to 10 mph. Gusts could reach 23 mph, increasing the wind chill effect. There is an 80% chance of precipitation, with around 2 inches of new snow possible during the day.

Monday night will see snow showers continuing, with lows near 7 degrees and wind chills as low as -2. Northwest winds will blow at 7 to 9 mph. Snow accumulation of about an inch is possible overnight.

Preparing Your Home

Heavy snow and cold temperatures require preparation to avoid hazards and discomfort. Here are some practical steps to take:

  • Clear gutters and drains to prevent ice dams and water damage as snow melts. Blocked gutters can cause water to back up and freeze, damaging your roof and walls.

  • Inspect your roof for loose shingles or weak spots that could collapse under heavy snow weight.

  • Seal windows and doors to keep cold air out and reduce heating costs. Use weather stripping or caulk where needed.

  • Stock up on essentials such as food, water, batteries, and medications to avoid unnecessary trips outside during the storm.

  • Prepare heating sources by checking your furnace, fireplace, or space heaters. Have extra fuel or firewood ready.

  • Keep flashlights and candles handy in case of power outages.

  • Protect outdoor pipes by insulating them or letting faucets drip to prevent freezing and bursting.

Preparing Your Vehicle

Driving in heavy snow and icy conditions can be dangerous. Prepare your vehicle to stay safe on the roads:

  • Check your tires for adequate tread and proper inflation. Consider snow tires or chains if you expect to drive in deep snow.

  • Fill your gas tank to avoid running out during delays or emergencies.

  • Keep an emergency kit in your car with items like blankets, a flashlight, extra batteries, a first aid kit, snacks, water, and a shovel.

  • Test your windshield wipers and fluid to ensure clear visibility.

  • Charge your phone fully before heading out and keep a car charger handy.

  • Drive slowly and maintain extra distance from other vehicles during the storm.

  • Clear snow and ice from all windows, mirrors, and lights before driving.
